Porcelain Veneers
Dental veneers are incredibly thin shells of tooth-colored material—in most cases, porcelain—that are custom-made and affixed to the front surface of existing teeth. By bonding veneers to natural teeth, dentists can provide patients with teeth that differ in color, shape, or length. In other words, this is a procedure meant to provide brighter, healthier smiles to those who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their teeth.
As noted, the preferred material is porcelain. Porcelain veneers are favored because they better resist stains, and they also do a better, more natural job of mimicking the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth.
The alternative is to obtain veneers made from resin composite materials. These are thinner than porcelain veneers, and require the dentist to remove less of the tooth surface before placing the veneer; with that said, they are not quite as natural in their appearance, nor are they are good at warding off stains.

Who are the best candidates for veneers?

Veneers are used to fix several common dental problems, including discoloration—which could stem from staining, excessive fluoride use, or a root canal. Teeth that are worn down or slightly chipped and broken can also be repaired with veneers.
Finally, veneers are good options for those who have misaligned teeth, oddly-shaped teeth, or teeth with gaps between them.
What is it like having veneers put on?
After your initial evaluation, you will have an appointment in which Dr. Dube removes about half a millimeter of enamel from the appropriate tooth or teeth. He’ll also makes a model of your tooth, and will send out for the veneers to be custom-made—a process that will take no more than two weeks.
Then, you’ll come into the office for the veneers to be bonded to your teeth, which can be done in just one, relatively brief visit.
How long do dental veneers last?
Dental veneers can last from five to 10 years, sometimes even longer. The lifespan of your dental veneers is largely dependent on your standards of oral hygiene. There is no special maintenance work needed; regular brushing and flossing is all it takes to maximize the lifespan of your veneers.
Veneers are generally not covered by insurance companies, though it is certainly worth checking with your insurance company before you have the process done.
